29: The Sermon on the Mount – Part 4

May 14, 2009

Major Text: Matthew 6:19-7:6

Outline:

  1. God First                           Matt. 6:19-7:5
  2. Others Second                   Matt. 7:6

Context/Discussion/Comments:

I found this passage of scripture very difficult to outline.  I may have divided this Sermon up in a different way but I have forced myself to follow the divisions given in the Harmony of the Gospels.  This passage contains a group of “one-liners” on different aspects.  In one sense it is a follow-up to what Jesus has taught through His example of prayer.  I think that makes a lot of sense and gives this passage some form of context from which to comment.

Jesus challenges us to:

  1. Lay up treasure in heaven instead of earth.
“thy Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.”

  2. Use our eyes for doing good, not bad.
“lead me not into temptation but deliver me from evil”

  3. Serve God instead of money.
“thy Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven”

“lead me not into temptation but deliver me from evil”

  4. Not worry about life such as what we wear and what we eat.
“give us this day our daily bread”

  5. Let Him care for us.
“give us this day our daily bread”

  6. Seek His kingdom and His righteousness.
“thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven”

  7. Trust Him for all things.
“give us this day our daily bread”

  8. Not judge others.
“forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors”

  9. Concentrate on our own life of righteousness.
“forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors”

  10. Discern whom we should share our faith.
“thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven”

Lessons/Applications:

  1. “Let go and let God.” He is calling you to live free.
  2. Our treasure in heaven is a result of our righteous acts of kindness. Your
treasure on earth is a result of your own effort. Kindness grows; work stops
    when you do.
  3. What you see affects how you live and think. Focus on Jesus, the Light of
the World. The light of the world is darkness, Satan. Light reveals Truth.
    Darkness hides, deceives truth.
  4. Have faith. Trust in Jesus. He will take care of us now and forever.
  5. Focus on forgiving instead of judging. Don’t condemn but offer hope and
    encouragement.
  6. You must get right with God before you can share God with others.
  7. Do not force your faith on others. Wait for accepting hearts. Live it. Then
share it. Don’t allow your faith to become contaminated.
