The Context of the Gospels

May 28, 2009

As stated in my forward, The Gospels comments are based on Robert L. Thomas and Stanley N. Gundry’s The NIV Harmony of the Gospels. The format for my comments will be as follows:

Title [a title or subject sentence]
Major Text [the text used to develop the outline and lesson]
Harmony Texts [where more than one text tells the same story]
Key Verse[s]

The Context of The Gospels

Consider this example:

John the Baptist comes to prepare the way for Christ. He sweeps the road, puts up signs announcing the Messiah is coming, and sets up stands along the road so the people can see Him come. John’s signs say “Repent and be Baptized”. Adhering to John’s message entitles you to a ticket in the stands to watch a parade in which Jesus is revealed as the Christ, the Messiah.

The parade starts with the banner “Repent and be Baptized”. John serves as the Grand Marshall but the subject is Jesus. Following John are many floats depicting angels proclaiming Jesus’ birth; Mary and Joseph by the manger with Jesus; Jesus as a young boy in the temple; Jesus changing water into wine; Jesus healing the blind, the sick, the demon possessed, and raising the dead; children sitting on Jesus’ lap; feeding the multitudes; teaching in the synagogues; Jesus riding on a donkey; His crucifixion; and the last float depicting His resurrection.

Interspersed between the floats are banners proclaiming:

  • I Am the Bread of Life John 6:35
  • I Am the Light of the World John 8:12
  • I Am the Door of the Sheep John 10:7
  • I Am the Good Shepherd John 10:11
  • I Am the Resurrection and the Life John 11:25
  • I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life John 14:6
  • I Am the Vine John 15:1

and finally

I AM the Christ, the Son of God
[Mark 14:61-62]

Jesus chooses His twelve disciples from among the crowd. He calls us from the multitudes just as He called Zacchaeus. I answered His call, came down from the stands and followed Him. How about you? Do you believe He is the Christ? Are you following Him or are you still sitting in the stands waiting for another?
