Psalm 61

June 4, 2009

This psalm of David expresses his confidence in God and his thankfulness for God’s blessings in this life and the life to come.

He begins by asking God to hear his prayer for he is faint and desires to hang on to a Rock, the Lord God Almighty. David recognizes that the Rock is higher than he, the Rock has more power and more authority than any man, even David, King of Israel. God is his refuge and the source of his strength. David is faint and he seeks the strength and power of Almighty God. David wants to dwell with God forever. He enjoys God, feels at home in His refuge under His wings.

David has vowed to be God’s child, God’s servant. God has granted him a long life and authority over God’s children. HE asks God to grant them loving-kindness and the truth so that Israel will be preserved to glorify God. David praises God and vows to serve Him each and every day.

Confidence in God, His Truth, and His refuge leads one to be attached to the Rock in service and glory to God. As such we have a heart of thankfulness enabling us to express the loving-kindness of God to others. Let us recognize how great God is and how great His love for us is. Let us give thanks to Him and praise His name as did David.
